When an event is organised by Axe Valley Runners (and Axmouth village hall management committee) you can expect hills, mud and challenging terrain-all good Grizzly training.
The Axmouth Challenge didn’t disappoint with all four distances starting with a steady climb up a hill. Conditions were good underfoot with milder air temperatures defrosting the mud.
SRC juniors Lucas Withecombe, sister Lucia and Catherine Witkowski took part in the 1 mile fun run. Lucas was 2nd boy to finish in 9.50, Lucia and Catherine 2nd and 3rd girls to finish in 13.04 and 18.14 respectively out of a field of 22.
Taking part in the 3 mile challenge were SRC juniors Christopher Witkowski, Emily Smith and Amelia Womersley-Westlake. Christopher finished in 5th place out of a field 12 in 34.05 with Emily seconds behind in 34.07, first female. This is Amelia’s third year at this event and despite being underage (dad Grahame Womersley-Westlake runs alongside) she finished 2nd female in 38.50.
Mighty Greens Christie and Greg Ward took on the 5 mile challenge and finished in 1:02:22, 7th out of a field of 24 and twins Christine and Karen Farnham completed the 9 mile challenge in 1:34:23 and 1:35:57 respectively.
The Four Trigs challenge is fast approaching, and Mark Norton took the opportunity on Sunday morning to lead a group of Mighty Greens around two of them, encountering a fallen tree or two in Harpford Woods.
Saturday saw the launch of Greendale farm shop’s park run and four Mighty Greens took part alongside 347 other runners. It was a very muddy one!
Four beginners turned out on Wednesday evening despite the snow, sleet, rain and freezing temperatures, for their first session with coaches Terry Bewes and Kathy Jordan. Chairman Terry said it was a sure sign they are determined to meet their running goals.
