  • Changes to the 2020 event
    • Chip timing.
    • Start between 9:00am and 10:10am.
    • Sadly we are not able to run a properly organised half distance race (Exe to Sid) or (Sid to Axe) this year.

About the Race

The race starts at the Foxes Hole Car Park on the Exmouth Sea Front and because of Covid and chip timing the race runners can set off anytime between 9am and 10:10am. The route follows the South West Coast Path for 20 miles or so and finishes at the Esplanade at Seaton. This is the 17th year of the race. In 2004 the race started from Seaton and finished in Exmouth, but since 2005 it has started in from Exmouth. Originally the distance was just over 20 miles, but a landslip in June 2012 on the outskirts of Seaton has led to a detour which means the distance is now nearer 22 miles. The race has been renamed JP’s Exe to Axe in memory of John Perratt, founding member and longterm Treasurer of Sidmouth Running Club, and a huge contributor to the sport throughout East Devon.

The race is for individuals and relay teams, dogs are not permitted. There are drink stations at  at Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth Sailing Club, Branscombe Mouth, and of course at the finish at Seaton. There will be a back marker marshall leaving from the start at 10:10am. The route follows the coastal path all the way so keep the sea on your right and follow the acorn signs.

Relay Option 2 to 4 runners, first runner starting at Exmouth, changeover recommended at water stations. ARC members £31:50 (team fee), non-ARC members £33:50, plus booking fee. See Full race for course details.

Half distance. Runners welcome to run half of the distance, timing chip will not identify run time. Strava or similar to be used and organisers advised of time. Full race entry required.

Chip Timing. Chips are to be attatched to runners running shoes (cable tie recommended), Relay runners will need to cut their timing chips off, attach them to their relay team member and also change the running number. At the end of the race timing chips are to be removed and returned to organisers so that they can be used again.

A brief description of the course can be found here. We are grateful to everyone who has sent us photos. Click here to see the gallery.

Transport will be provided from the Finish to the Start (Exmouth) but only before the race leaving Seaton at 8:30am and on condition that a place is booked in advance. The coaches arrive about 9:30 so this option will not be appropriate for runners wanting an early start from Exmouth..

Please indicate on the entry if this is required so that we can cater for numbers. Hand baggage or kit can be transported from the start at Exmouth to the finish if required. No Entries on the day.

Deferred entry from 2019. Runners who deferred their entry from 2019 will need to contact us to take up their deferred entry.

Time Limit: 6 hours. Cut-off times: Budleigh Salterton: 11:15am, Sidmouth: 12:45pm, Branscombe: 2:45pm, Seaton: 4pm.

Runners who fail to make the cut-off times will be withdrawn from the Race.

There will be mementos for all finishers and teams, though most runners come for the views. Further information will be sent via email to all entries.

On-line entries are available through SiEntries.

Race numbers and timing chips will be mailed out before the race.
