Exe to Axe – Course

The full course follows the South West Coast Path from Exmouth to Seaton, finishing on the beach by the Axe Valley Yacht Club. The GPX file can be downloaded here.

The course can be considered as four stages. The Exe to Sid follows the first two stages; the Sid to Axe follows the second two stages.

9.90km – Exmouth to Budleigh Salterton (South Farm)
The route starts on the promenade in Exmouth for the first mile before heading onto a narrow path to Orcombe Point and on a fairly flat stretch to Devon Cliffs Holiday Park. The route then climbs steeply to East Devon Golf Course before descending into the coastal village of Budleigh Salterton (with great options for Fish & Chips and/or Ice Cream).

There will be a marshal at Lime Kiln car park, at the far end of the Budleigh to point you to the path, which turns away from the sea towards White Bridge. At White Bridge, you make a right turn and right again where you will see the aid station.

The aid station is set up at White Farm (aka Pyne’s Farm Shop). The aid station will predominantly have water and a few snacks (in past years there have been very few takers of snacks at this stage).

9.65km – Budleigh Salterton to Sidmouth
Getting to Sidmouth you pass through Ladram Bay Holiday Park. When you come out on the holiday park road that leads to the beach you cross over and then take the path opposite that takes you towards the sea and around the front of the café and swimming pool.

Descending down into Sidmouth from the top of Peak Hill you will enter some woods that take you down to Sidmouth. When you exit the woods, you exit onto the Peak Hill road at Peak Hill. There will be a marshal placed here, but please be careful when you join the road.

Finally, the promenade can get busy, so please be considerate of those enjoying their walk.
The aid station is located at the Sidmouth Water Sports Hub. The aid station will have water, coca cola and a selection of snacks.

10.15km – Sidmouth to Branscombe
This is where the course really starts, with a series of steep hills. This section can be muddy and slippery if it has been raining, so please be careful. You leave Sidmouth over the new bridge and wind up a path to Cliff Road. Go up Cliff Road, following it around to the left at the top; turn right on Laskeys Lane and finally right back onto a foot path. Once you are climbing up the slope to Salcombe Hill the navigation is straightforward.

The aid station is at Branscombe Beach opposite the Sea Shanty café. The aid station will have water, coca cola and a selection of snacks.

6.90km – Branscombe to Seaton
This section starts with a challenging hill – when you get near the end of the first field, it is better to go straight up to the top of the hill rather than taking the official coast path route.

Navigation is mostly straightforward, but you need to pay attention to enter the woods just after Seaton Hole (otherwise you will add a few hundred metres to your run). You also need to be careful on the Beer Road crossing, where a marshal will direct you onto the right path.
