A very big thumbs up to all our juniors!
Stephanie Smith wearing the Mighty Green for the first time and daughter Georgia at their first Parkrun at Killerton preparing for the Otter Rail and River race. It was so hot and dusty but the haribo and jelly babies really helped she said.
Jenny Bently took part in the 3rd Colmers Hill 10k Challenge, a multi-terrain 10km Running event on Sunday the 7th of July.
This was mainly an off road race which was started and finished at the Symondsbury Estate Manor Yard in the heart of the picturesque village of Symondsbury, Dorset. The route took the competitors up and down many hills and along privately owned paths and tracks. It also is the only commercial event that is allowed access to the privately owned and iconic Colmers Hill. The event is for all abilities and it was really uplifting when other runners gave encouragement as they passed by.
The spectators and marshalls were fantastic all the way around the route giving maximum encouragement to the runners, also vital hydration and jelly babies. This year the race organisers were very proud that the race was plastic free all drinks stations were supplied with Ooho capsules. Ooho is a sustainable flexible packaging for liquids made from seaweed-extract. As such it is a 100% natural alternative to plastic bottles, cups and sachets. The Ooho material degrades in a natural environment in 6 weeks on average and is also edible. Jenny completed the Colmers Hill Challenge in 1h13m35s (chip time).
Paul and Julie Mitchell are volunteers for WaterAid who provide volunteers for the Glastonbury Festival. Glastonbury then make a donation to WaterAid for services provided. We worked 24hrs in shifts giving out water during temperatures approaching 28 C. WaterAid provided about 650 volunteers this year. Whilst manning the water station, Paul asked around to see who wanted to go for a run. A number of people did want to go for a festival run around the site. Paul then found out that their were two runs already organised by a health professional working in an area called the healing field. The Thursday run had circa 105 runners as reported in the daily news sheet. It just shows that runners will run whenever they can and that us Mighty Greens get everywhere.
Every Friday, a small group of runners mostly made up of Sidmouth Running Club members get together for a morning jaunt. They meet up in various locations in the East Devon Area for a five to six mile run. This Friday (5th July) a blue sky morning, fifteen runners and one K9 all congregated at Stantyway Farm near Otterton. They set off for the cooler air along the Triassic stretch of the of South West Coastal Path. This group is for a more leisurely paced experience so good views are always written into the schedule of the route. This gives the participants a chance to stop and just think, a chance to catch their breath or even for photographic opportunities. The group headed on towards the mouth of the River Otter, crossing it at South Farm Road and on up-stream for about half a mile to another foot bridge across the river. A short zig-zag over the hill and back to Stantyway Farm for a cuppa, cake, cookie and chatter.
Alexa Baker in Llandudno. It’s a long way to run around the bay at 7.30 am
Paul Mitchell at Glastonbury with the Proclaimers singing 500 miles in the background before setting off with around 100 others for a 5k run around the site.
On Saturday 22nd of June Danny Painter took on the very challenging hilly but scenic Giants Head Marathon in Dorset organised by White Star Running. The route took Danny through the beautiful Sydling and Cerne valleys, along foot paths and through fields, around and under the famous Cerne Giant. With over 3200ft of elevation gain and is a slightly longer than standard length marathon, but it gives stunning views worth stopping for. Danny came 44th with a time of 04h46m48s.
